“It’s not where or how you travel that makes a good or a bad travel writer, it’s why.”

Zoë Brân is an author, journalist and former lecturer in Travel Writing and Travel Photography. She has published books of travel literature on Vietnam, Burma, the Former Yugoslavia and most recently Cuba - places her publisher, Lonely Planet Journeys, refers to jokingly as ‘miserable socialist countries’.

Zoë has pioneered courses in Travel Writing for four London universities. She is currently a Writer in Residence at the University of the Arts and a Fellow of the Royal Literary Fund.

“Everyone travels, whether it’s to the Galapagos or to visit relatives up the road. Most people write about their holidays, even if it’s postcard or descriptive email home. Everyone has a story to tell. I work by encouraging prospective writers to see and describe the world with fresh eyes and a personal voice, whatever your writing aims.”

Postcards, e-mails, everyone write about their travels one way or another.  If you've ever wanted to really bring your experiences to life for your readers then this is the course for you.  Zoe will introduce you to the basic skills and principles of travel writing and you will learn how to: develop and structure your themes, understand the key elements of travel writing, explore narrative and dialogue, observe place as ‘character’. You will also look at what travel writing is and is not through discussing some classic and popular examples of travel writing.  By the end of the course you will have written and revised a short piece of travel writing that you'll be happy to show your friends!

Reviews for Zoe's work:

Complex, full of conflicting voices, and often extraordinarily beautiful: an outstanding travel memoir.
   Kirkus Reviews,  ‘After Yugoslavia’

Brân delves deep into the history and culture of Cuba to reveal a complex, unflinching panorama of this contradictory country. She creates a powerful picture of the Cuban psyche -- intelligent, educated, fun loving, and thought provoking.
Paul Heller, Big Blue Marble Books, ‘Enduring Cuba’
